On June 27, 1948, Officer Fred Crenshaw was taking a man to a guardhouse for questioning regarding several robberies on the Capitol Grounds. The suspect suddenly pulled out a pistol and shot Officer Crenshaw twice. Officer Crenshaw was taken to the hospital with a bullet lodged near his spine. He never fully recovered, and died from complications from the gunshot wounds on January 5, 1952.
