Important USCP Related Government Shutdown Information
The United States Capitol Police (USCP) Public Information Office is closed for routine business (starting on October 1, 2025) during the federal government shutdown. The office will re-open when the federal government is funded.
The USCP Public Information Officer will still activate during critical incidents to communicate life-safety information with the Congressional community, the press, and the public.
Security
The federal government shutdown does not affect the security of the Capitol Complex. USCP officers, and the professional staff who perform or support emergency functions, still report to work. According to the Antideficiency Act, these emergency functions are critical for the safety of human life and the protection of property.
The House and Senate Office Buildings are still open to the public. The Library of Congress is closed to the public.
Tours
The U.S. Capitol Visitor Center is closed during the federal government shutdown and Capitol tours are cancelled. For more information, please visit the Capitol Visitor Center website.
Permits
During a federal government shutdown, applications for demonstrations will be accepted, but not processed until the federal government is funded.
Groups that had a demonstration permit approved prior to the federal government shutdown will be allowed to hold that demonstration pursuant to that permit as scheduled. Any approved commercial filming permits may continue to occur.
