USCP Clears Suspicious Suitcase on Capitol Grounds
The United States Capitol Police's (USCP) Hazardous Devices Section secured the Capitol Grounds this afternoon by ensuring a suspicious suitcase was safe after the suitcase was left on a walkway near the Capitol Building.
After 3:00 p.m., USCP officers responded to the suspicious suitcase, which was near the Southwest Drive of the U.S. Capitol and Independence Avenue, SW.
A person, whose face could not be easily seen because of their clothing, was spotted leaving the suitcase on the walkway and then leaving the area.
The Department promptly told everyone to avoid the area, shutdown nearby roads, and evacuated the nearby U.S. Botanic Garden.
The Hazardous Devices Section examined the suitcase and did not detect anything dangerous. Then the team opened the bag for a closer inspection and to ensure everyone was safe.
The area re-opened around 4:45 p.m.
United States Capitol Police investigators are working to identify the person who left the suitcase behind. At this time, there is no evidence that shows this incident is connected to another case.
