Today at approximately 10:00 am, U.S. Capitol Police officers observed a man behaving in a suspicious manner at the base of the exterior rotunda steps of the U.S. Capitol. Officers intercepted him and prevented him from entering the rotunda door of the Capitol as he attempted to enter the restricted area at the base of the steps.

Refusing to obey commands to leave the restricted area, the subject began yelling and screaming, becoming increasingly violent. He began to struggle, striking several officers and resisting arrest. Once the individual was under control, U.S. Capitol Police officers discovered a green leafy substance in his possession during the search incident to arrest. The man was transported to USCP headquarters for processing.

He is identified as 47 year old Abdifatah S. Suleiman of Tennessee and has been charged with Assault on a Police Officer; Assault With a Deadly Weapon (Shod Foot); Unlawful Entry; Disorderly Conduct; Failure to Obey a Police Officer; USCA - Possession of Marijuana.

If there are any questions about these events or security procedures, you may contact the United States Capitol Police Public Information Office at 202-224-1677.
