Statement of Chief Matthew Verderosa at Joint Press Conference regarding June 14, 2017, Shooting

June 21, 2017

USCP and FBI Provide Investigation Update

The following are Chief Verderosa's remarks at today's joint press conference.

The joint press release regarding the status of the investigation may be found here: :

"I want to again thank everyone in the Congressional community and the public throughout the country for their overwhelming outpouring of support.

"This matter continues to be an ongoing, internal investigation for our Department, therefore, I will not be commenting on specific details of this case.

"The two U.S. Capitol Police Special Agents and the three Alexandria Police Officers -- Nicole Battaglia, Alexander Jensen, and Kevin Jobe -- define what a hero truly is.

"Without regard to their personal safety, they stepped up and did what was necessary to protect those around them. This speaks volumes about their characters, their commitment, and their humanity. These qualities are all that matter as a law enforcement officer, and they are the qualities that we look for in all our officers.

"I am pleased to report that Special Agent David Bailey has been recovering quickly and is no longer using his crutches. Special Agent Crystal Griner continues to be in good condition following surgeries on her ankle.

"It was Special Agents Bailey's and Griner's dedication to the United States Capitol Police mission and their experience and training that helped save lives last Wednesday. They make me proud to be a police officer, and even prouder to be their Chief.

"Again, I'd like to thank all of our law enforcement partners and we continue to send our thoughts and prayers to those who continue to recover from their injuries."
