Street Closures Planned for Capitol Grounds during Marine Corps Marathon

Annual race will impact Capitol Complex on Sunday, October 27, 2019

The running of the 44th annual Marine Corps Marathon will occur on Sunday, October 27, 2019. In order to ensure the safety of the approximately 30,000 runners expected to participate in event, there will be several street closures throughout the Capitol Grounds beginning at approximately 6 a.m.

The United States Capitol Police will implement traffic cuts and street closures as necessary throughout the day. All street closures and times are subject to change. Motorists will likely encounter delays and are encouraged to seek alternative routes.

Road closures will include:

  • Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, between First and Third Streets, NW
  • First Street NW, between Constitution Avenue, NW, and Peace Circle
  • First Street, SW, between Garfield Circle and First Street, SW
  • Maryland Avenue, SW, between First and Third Streets, SW

In addition, the Washington Metropolitan Police Department will close Third Street, NW/SW, between Constitution and Independence Avenues.

Tour buses that normally drop off passengers at Peace and Garfield Circles will be redirected to the intersection of First Street, NW, and Louisiana Avenue, NW, and the intersection of Washington Avenue, SW, and Independence Avenue, SW, during the race.

The traffic restrictions throughout the Capitol Grounds are expected to be lifted at approximately 1 p.m.
