(Washington, D.C.) - The United States Capitol Police Crash Team in partnership with Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Major Crash Unit are investigating a traffic crash which occurred on South Capitol Street and D Street, Southeast.

On Friday, March 7, 2014 at approximately 3:00 a.m., a BMW SUV being operated by a sole occupant was traveling northbound on South Capitol Street, Southeast. The vehicle continued traveling northbound, outside of the United States Capitol Police secure perimeter, where it struck a flower planter protecting the South Capitol Street and D Street, Southeast vehicle entrance, which was closed at the time of the incident. As a result of striking the flower planter, the vehicle was propelled airborne and struck a tree on the southwest curbside of the United States Capitol Police secure access travel lanes, where it ultimately came to rest. D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel transported the operator of the BMW to a local hospital for treatment.

The traffic crash remains under investigation by the United States Capitol Police Crash Team and the Metropolitan Police Department's Major Crash Unit.
