The United States Capitol Police would like to remind those who may be affected by our vehicle checkpoints some of the standard guidelines when approaching a security checkpoint. The following information is meant to both expedite the checks of your vehicle as well as ensure everyone’s safety.

Have patience when approaching the checkpoints-slow down to minimize the risk of injury.

Minimize your use of cell phones while proceeding through checkpoints.

* The use of any communication device without a hands-free while operating a vehicle is illegal in the District of Columbia.

Lower the volume of your radio so you are able to hear the directions of the officers.

Roll down windows to decrease the amount of time it takes to inspect your vehicle. SUV’s and cars with tinted windows are highly encouraged to do so

Be prepared to open trunks or hatch backs to assist in the inspection process.

With your cooperation, we can greatly reduce the time it will take to inspect your vehicle. Our goal is to complete each inspection as quickly, yet thoroughly, as possible.

Also, thank you for assisting us in our mission of protecting and securing Congress so that it can fulfill its constitutional responsibilities in a safe and open environment.

If you have any questions regarding the information contained above, please call (202) 224-1677. The United States Capitol Police appreciates your patience during this heightened security level.
