Gun Arrest with High-Capacity Magazines Marks the USCP’s 22nd Firearm Related Arrest in 2023
This morning United States Capitol Police (USCP) officers made their 22nd gun related arrest this year.
At approximately 3:00 a.m., a USCP officer saw a Blue Honda Accord stopped in a crosswalk in the 500 block of South Capitol Street, SW – two blocks from the House Congressional Buildings.
The car remained stopped through multiple traffic light cycles without moving. The officer approached the driver who was asleep. The officer woke the driver and determined the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
During the DUI arrest, a Glock handgun was recovered from the car, as well as four partially loaded magazines – a drum magazine, a high capacity 33-round magazine, and two 10 round magazines.
"This is just another example of the great police and protective work our entire Department does to keep our stakeholders and the Capitol Hill community safe," said United States Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger. "All weapons are prohibited from Capitol Grounds. Even if you have a gun that is legally registered in another state, or the District of Columbia, it is still illegal around here."
- In 2022, the USCP made 25 firearm related arrests.
- In 2023, January 1 through July 11, the USCP made 22 firearm related arrests.
The driver, 31 year old Angelo Day, of Maryland was charged with Carrying a Pistol without a License, Possession of an Unregistered Firearm, Possession of Unregistered Ammunition, Possession of a High Capacity Magazine, and Driving Under the Influence.
