Street Closures Planned for Capitol Grounds during Marine Corps Marathon

Annual race will impact Capitol Campus on October 20, 2016

WASHINGTON, DC – The 41st annual Marine Corps Marathon is taking place on Sunday, October 30, 2016. In order to ensure the safety of the approximately 30,000 runners expected to participate in event, there will be several street closures throughout the Capitol Grounds beginning at approximately 8:30 a.m.

The United States Capitol Police will implement traffic cuts and street closures as necessary throughout the day.

Marathon participants will enter Capitol Grounds from Pennsylvania Avenue and Third Street, NW. They will continue southeast on Pennsylvania Avenue to First Street, NW; then south on First Street, NW/SW to Maryland Avenue, SW. Continuing southwest on Maryland Avenue, they’ll run onto Third Street, SW, exiting the Capitol Grounds.

Tour buses that normally drop off passengers at Peace and Garfield Circles will be redirected to the intersection of First Street, NW, and Louisiana Avenue, NW, and the intersection of Washington Avenue, SW, and Independence Avenue, SW, during the race.

The traffic restrictions are expected to be lifted at approximately 1 p.m.
