Updated Statement from Chief Matthew Verderosa and Investigation Update
"On behalf of the women and men of the United States Capitol Police, I want to extend my thanks and gratitude to Members of Congress, the Congressional community, and the many private citizens who have contacted us with well wishes and praise for our injured officers and our Department following the June 14, 2017, incident in Alexandria, Virginia. We are very appreciative of the outpouring of support.
"The United States Capitol Police have a proud history of protecting the U.S. Capitol, Members of Congress and all others who come to the Capitol Complex. Our mission is clear and our employees proudly serve the Congress and our country. This week was an example of our Department’s unwavering commitment to carrying out our mission.
"All law enforcement agencies are dedicated to serving and protecting citizens across our country. I want to again give special thanks and recognition to the Alexandria Police Department and their Chief, Michael Brown. The Alexandria police officers responded to the emergency calls within minutes, and they were heroic in their efforts to contain the suspect and protect everyone on that field.
"I also again want to thank the FBI, ATF, U.S. Park Police, Virginia State Police, Alexandria Sheriff’s Office and Alexandria Fire Department for their partnership and assistance in responding to and investigating this incident and treating the wounded.
"We are continuing to work with our partners as well as conduct our own internal investigation of the incident. And, we continue to keep those injured in our thoughts and prayers."
