USCP Recruitment Videos Aim to Fill Open Positions, Expand the Department

October 19, 2021

Since January 6, the United States Capitol Police has been working to enhance the Department.

One of our top priorities is to hire more than 200 additional sworn officers for our critical mission to protect the Congress and the U.S. Capitol. The Department is authorized for roughly 2,000 sworn officers and currently has more than 1,800.

As part of an effort to expand and diversify the workforce, USCP leaders just released this new recruitment video with Chief Tom Manger: VIDEO

"We are looking for really good women and men who want to serve their country," said USCP Chief Tom Manger.

Applicants can apply here.

"We are looking for applicants who meet high standards of professionalism, integrity, public service, and physical fitness," said Inspector Monique Moore who is with the USCP's Office of Background Investigations and Credentialing.

Another recruitment video, which will come out later this month, will focus on the women in law enforcement who work in and lead divisions across the Department.

"Diversity and inclusion are critical to the success of any organization," said Chief Administrative Officer Richard Braddock. "A diverse workforce is a priority for us."

Attrition has been a problem for law enforcement agencies across the country. According to the International Association of Chiefs of Police, 78% of law enforcement agencies reported having difficulty recruiting qualified candidates. 25% reported having to reduce or eliminate agency services, units, or positions because of staffing problems.

This year has been more significant for the U.S. Capitol Police, which has lost more than 100 sworn officers. That number, which is slightly higher than normal, includes a couple mandatory retirements, a few disability retirements and nearly two dozen officers who moved onto local, state and federal agencies.

On Friday, 21 USCP recruits graduated from the Academy. This is the first of five post January 6 classes with more classes on the way.

The Department's benefits and salaries set us apart from other agencies. In addition, you can invest in your future through our retirement and education programs.
