In preparation for the 59th Presidential Inauguration, the following road closures are in effect beginning today, January 12, 2021, until further notice.
As the Acting Chief of Police, I am committed to leading the United States Capitol Police (USCP) Department through this challenging time.
I want to first extend my gratitude for the kind words and prayers we have received following the loss of two of our USCP family last week. Officer Brian D. Sicknick and Officer Howard C. Liebengood were highly respected police officers, and both will be greatly missed. The Department continues to provide extensive support services to their families as well as to USCP employees to assist them through this difficult time.
The United States Capitol Police is deeply saddened by the off-duty death on January 9, 2021, of Officer Howard Liebengood, age 51. He was assigned to the Senate Division, and has been with the Department since April 2005. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and colleagues.
We ask that his family, and other USCP officers' and their families' privacy be respected during this profoundly difficult time.

Assaulting a Police Officer (APO), Unlawful Entry, Resisting Arrest

United States Capitol Police (USCP) officers and our law enforcement partners responded valiantly when faced with thousands of individuals involved in violent riotous actions as they stormed the United States Capitol Building. These individuals actively attacked United States Capitol Police Officers and other uniformed law enforcement officers with metal pipes, discharged chemical irritants, and took up other weapons against our officers. They were determined to enter into the Capitol Building by causing great damage.
Chief Steven A. Sund announced today that Assistant Chief Yogananda Pittman is the 2020 recipient of the Women in Federal Law Enforcement's (WIFLE) "Outstanding Advocate for Women in Federal Law Enforcement" award.

Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will lie in repose at the Supreme Court of the United States on Wednesday, September 23, and Thursday, September 24. The casket will arrive in front of the Court just before 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
In preparation for the 59th Presidential Inauguration on January 20, 2021, beginning on Monday, September 7, 2020, access to the West Front of the U.S. Capitol will be restricted to allow for the safe and secure construction of the Inaugural platform, stands, and other infrastructure necessary to support the event.
The Capitol Police Board issued a Board Order closing the following areas of the West Front from September 7, 2020 through February 28, 2021. The United States Capitol Police will deny access to anyone not authorized to be within the restricted area.
Officer Vincent Arenas of the Kenosha, Wisconsin, Police Department was employed by the United States Capitol Police from June 2017 – January 2019. He voluntarily resigned his position in good standing as a private with training.
