The U.S. Capitol Police was involved in a fatal shooting this evening and the death investigation is currently being led in a cooperative effort by the Metropolitan Police Department with the full support of the U.S. Capitol Police.

On Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at approximately 9:50 A.M., U.S. Capitol Police Officer John W. Ruskoski was struck by a moving vehicle at the intersection of 1st and Constitution, NE, while on routine motorcycle patrol.

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) arrived at the United States Capitol Police on January 3, 2009, to complete its on-site evaluation of the Department for CALEA reaccreditation for the 2006 – 2008 period.

At approximately 2:20 pm today, a driver approached a U.S. Capitol Police officer for directions at Third Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. Upon further investigation, the vehicle was deemed suspicious and the driver was detained for further questioning. He was arrested without incident and transported to USCP headquarters for processing.
