The U.S. Capitol Police Department is deeply grateful for this tribute to our fallen hero. Thank you, Speaker Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Schumer.
"It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the passing of Officer William 'Billy' Evans this afternoon from injuries he sustained following an attack at the North Barricade by a lone assailant. Officer Evans had been a member of the United States Capitol Police for 18 years. He began his USCP service on March 7, 2003, and was a member of the Capitol Division's First Responder's Unit. Please keep Officer Evans and his family in your thoughts and prayers."
–Acting U.S. Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman
U.S. Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman promoted 23 sworn personnel across the Department on Sunday.
Notably, Inspector Jason Bell was promoted to Deputy Chief of the Operational Services Bureau; and Captains Jeanita Mitchell and Denea Newell were promoted to Inspector.
Inspector Mitchell is assigned to the Protective Services Bureau's Investigations Division.
Inspector Newell is assigned to the Operational Services Bureau's Special Operations Division.
Inspector is similar to the position of Major in other police departments.
All of the fencing that surrounded the outer perimeter of the U.S. Capitol Complex has been removed. Affected roads have reopened. The USCP is ready to quickly ramp up security at a moment's notice, if needed.
The inner perimeter fence, around the Capitol Building, is still in place, while the Department works with our congressional stakeholders and law enforcement partners to strengthen our security posture.
In the coming weeks, the United States Capitol Police will continue to improve access around the U.S. Capitol, while fulfilling our mission to protect Congress and the Capitol Hill community.
The USCP has already modified fencing along 3rd Street, NW, Louisiana Avenue, NW, and Washington Avenue, SW to help drivers and pedestrians. For security reasons, we will not provide a detailed timeline of specific, future changes.
The current infrastructure and National Guard assistance is temporary.
The United States Capitol Police continues to mourn the loss of Officer Brian Sicknick. His bravery on January 6 will be something our police family will always remember.
The U.S. Capitol Police is extremely grateful for the Department of Defense's continued commitment to support our critical mission to protect Congress. The National Guard has played a critical role to the Department's enhanced security posture. We thank the Guard and the Department of Defense for their partnership.
The U.S. Capitol Police looks forward to reviewing the detailed recommendations from Lt. General Russel Honoré and his team. We believe enhancements to the Capitol complex's physical infrastructure are required. We also agree we need to increase our manpower and overall response capabilities. The Department will continue to work with our congressional stakeholders and law enforcement partners as we strengthen our security measures at the Capitol.
Today, US Capitol Police Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman formally asked the Department of Defense to extend the support provided by the National Guard to remain at the Capitol beyond March 12th.
