The United States Capitol Police is deeply saddened by the off-duty death on January 9, 2021, of Officer Howard Liebengood, age 51. He was assigned to the Senate Division, and has been with the Department since April 2005. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and colleagues.

We ask that his family, and other USCP officers' and their families' privacy be respected during this profoundly difficult time.

United States Capitol Police (USCP) officers and our law enforcement partners responded valiantly when faced with thousands of individuals involved in violent riotous actions as they stormed the United States Capitol Building. These individuals actively attacked United States Capitol Police Officers and other uniformed law enforcement officers with metal pipes, discharged chemical irritants, and took up other weapons against our officers. They were determined to enter into the Capitol Building by causing great damage.

Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will lie in repose at the Supreme Court of the United States on Wednesday, September 23, and Thursday, September 24. The casket will arrive in front of the Court just before 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Inaugural Platform Construction    September 2020

In preparation for the 59th Presidential Inauguration on January 20, 2021, beginning on Monday, September 7, 2020, access to the West Front of the U.S. Capitol will be restricted to allow for the safe and secure construction of the Inaugural platform, stands, and other infrastructure necessary to support the event.

The Capitol Police Board issued a Board Order closing the following areas of the West Front from September 7, 2020 through February 28, 2021. The United States Capitol Police will deny access to anyone not authorized to be within the restricted area.

Officer Vincent Arenas of the Kenosha, Wisconsin, Police Department was employed by the United States Capitol Police from June 2017 – January 2019. He voluntarily resigned his position in good standing as a private with training.

Steven A. Sund, Chief of Police, announced today the selection of Thomas A. (Tad) DiBiase as the United States Capitol Police (USCP) General Counsel, effective August 16, 2020.

The Office of the General Counsel is directly responsible to the Chief of Police, and provides legal advice to the operational and administrative elements of the Department. Mr. DiBiase has been serving as the USCP's Acting General Counsel since October 2019, and also served as Deputy General Counsel for 10 years.

The late Congressman John R. Lewis will lie in state in the U.S. Capitol on Monday, July 27 and Tuesday, July 28, 2020. In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Congressman Lewis will lie in state at the top of the East Front Steps of the U.S. Capitol Building to allow for public viewing outdoors.

It is recommended that members of the public pay their respects virtually. Virtual tributes may be posted online using the hashtags #BelovedCommunity or #HumanDignity.
