The United States Capitol Police Department is aware of and prepared for any potential threats towards members of Congress or towards the Capitol complex. We have obtained intelligence that shows a possible plot to breach the Capitol by an identified militia group on Thursday, March 4. We have already made significant security upgrades to include establishing a physical structure and increasing manpower to ensure the protection of Congress, the public and our police officers.
The medical examiner's report on Officer Brian Sicknick's death, which followed the attack on the Capitol on January 6, is not yet complete. We are awaiting toxicology results and continue to work with other government agencies regarding the death investigation.
Officer Sicknick's family has asked for privacy during this difficult time and that the spreading of misinformation stop regarding the cause of his death. The Department and the Sicknick family appreciate the outpouring of support for our fallen officer.

Today, U.S. Capitol Police Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman will appear before the House Subcommittee on the Legislative Branch via WebEx to testify at 10am ET about the attack on the Capitol on January 6th.
Acting Chief Pittman said, "I look forward to speaking in this open hearing to share with Congress and the American people the actions taken by the Department in the days leading up to January 6th, important changes we've made since that day, and the heroism displayed by our officers."
Acting House Sergeant at Arms Tim Blodgett will also testify.
As the investigation continues into the events of January 6, 2021, it's important to correct misinformation some in the media have reported, and that's been shared on social media. Reports identifying Special Agent David Bailey as the officer involved in the shooting in the Speaker's Lobby are inaccurate. The Department will share additional information once the investigation is complete.

"It's been just over one month since one of our nation's darkest days, and the trauma is still incredibly raw and difficult for the many officers who fought heroically on the 6th. Since being sworn in on January 8th, my executive team and I have made the well-being of our officers our top priority. While progress has been made, more work remains. And I am committed to ensuring every officer gets what they need and deserve."

Earlier today, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced she will introduce legislation awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) and other law enforcement personnel who protected the Capitol on January 6.
Speaker Pelosi praised the "extraordinary valor of the Capitol Police, who risked and gave their lives to save our Capitol, our democracy, our lives. They are martyrs for our democracy."
The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest honor Congress can bestow.
A vote of no confidence is expected this week regarding multiple U.S. Capitol Police Department officials, including Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman. Though the vote does not compel any specific action, it does speak to the sentiment and concerns of some of our officers that our senior commanders are working to address. We do appreciate the letters of support we have received from the immediate past president of our fraternal order of police as well as the local Teamsters union.
At approximately 9:05 a.m., on Thursday, February 4, 2021, United States Capitol Police Officers stopped an adult, female Suspect attempting to gain entry in her vehicle at a security checkpoint at New Jersey Avenue and D Street, SE. The Officers advised the Suspect that she could not enter the checkpoint. The Suspect ignored the Officer's instruction and proceeded forward, striking a USCP Officer who was standing in front of her vehicle.
"Thanks to the efforts of the Congressional Leadership, especially House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Administration, enough doses of the COVID-19 vaccines have been secured to vaccinate all USCP personnel. I also want to acknowledge retired Lt. General Russel Honoré, who is leading the external review of Capitol Complex security at the Speaker's request, for his assistance with this effort.
"The family of U.S. Capitol Police Officer Brian D. Sicknick thanks the Congressional leadership for bestowing this historic honor on our fallen American hero. We also wish to express our appreciation to the millions of people who have offered their support and sympathies during this difficult time. Knowing our personal tragedy and loss is shared by our nation brings hope for healing."
