On February 4, 2020, President Donald J. Trump will deliver his State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress in the Chamber of the House of Representatives beginning at 9 p.m.

Given the high level of security surrounding the event, the United States Capitol Police (USCP) is responsible for a significant amount of preparation and coordination with its numerous law enforcement partners, including the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Park Police, and Metropolitan Police Department.


October 24, 2019

The running of the 44th annual Marine Corps Marathon will occur on Sunday, October 27, 2019. In order to ensure the safety of the approximately 30,000 runners expected to participate in event, there will be several street closures throughout the Capitol Grounds beginning at approximately 6 a.m.

The United States Capitol Police will implement traffic cuts and street closures as necessary throughout the day. All street closures and times are subject to change. Motorists will likely encounter delays and are encouraged to seek alternative routes.

The late Congressman Elijah E. Cummings will lie in state in the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, October 24, 2019. Members of the public and the Congressional community are invited to pay their respects at the U.S. Capitol.

Following a private arrival ceremony to include Congressman Cummings' family and Members of Congress in Statuary Hall, the U.S. Capitol will open to the public from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m., on Thursday, October 24. All visitors will enter through the South entrance of the Capitol Visitor Center.

Chief Steven A. Sund announced the promotion of personnel to the positions of Assistant Chief and Deputy Chief effective October 20, 2019.

"These commanders are committed to our mission and to the Department. The wealth of knowledge and experience they each bring to their new positions will assist us in continuing to raise the bar as we address new and emerging threats, ensure our operational readiness, and develop and implement new strategic goals and objectives," said Chief Sund.

On Sunday, September 1, 2019, the annual Labor Day Capitol Concert, featuring the National Symphony Orchestra, will be held on the West Front of the United States Capitol beginning at 8 p.m. The gates will open to the public at 3 p.m.

On Thursday, July 4, 2019, the 39th annual "A Capitol Fourth" Concert, celebrating America's Independence Day, will air live from the West Front of the United States Capitol.

The concert begins at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4, and gates will open to the public at 3 p.m.

There will also be a full concert dress rehearsal on Wednesday, July 3, 2019, beginning at 8 p.m. Gates will open to the public at 3 p.m.

Both events are open to the public and no tickets are required.

The Capitol Police Board announced today the selection of Acting Chief of Police Steven A. Sund as the 10th Chief of Police of the United States Capitol Police. "The Capitol Police Board is confident Chief Sund's operational knowledge of the Department and experience serving as the Assistant Chief coupled with his lengthy law enforcement career will be a tremendous asset in leading the Department in the years ahead."
