The United States Capitol Police (USCP) has again been recognized as a premier police department by receiving its sixth consecutive accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). CALEA is the leading credentialing authority to improve public safety services across the country.

Chief Matthew R. Verderosa and Assistant Chief Steven A. Sund accepted the Advanced Law Enforcement Accreditation with Excellence, Meritorious Award on behalf of the Department on November 18, 2017, at the annual CALEA Conference.


October 18, 2017

The running of the 42nd annual Marine Corps Marathon is taking place on Sunday, October 22, 2017. In order to ensure the safety of the approximately 30,000 runners expected to participate in event, there will be several street closures throughout the Capitol Complex beginning at approximately 6 a.m.

October 17, 2017

On October 11, 2017, the United States Capitol Police "Guards" defeated the "Mean Machine" on the football field during the biennial Congressional Football Game for Charity by a score of 7-0. The "Guards," not hampered by a light, steady rain, displayed impressive teamwork in defeating the combined Member of Congress/NFL Alumni squad.

The series now stands at 6-1-1.


September 25, 2017

At approximately 2 p.m., the United States Capitol Police (USCP) responded to the Senate Finance Committee hearing room in the Dirksen Senate Office Building for reported demonstration activity.

Officers on the scene arrested the demonstrators when they failed to cease and desist with their unlawful demonstration activities in the Committee hearing room, resulting in the disruption of the hearing. Fifteen demonstrators were arrested and charged with DC Code §10-503.16 - Disruption of Congress.


August 28, 2017

On Sunday, September 3, 2017, the annual Labor Day Capitol Concert, featuring the National Symphony Orchestra, will be held on the West Front of the United States Capitol beginning at 8 p.m. The gates will open to the public at 3 p.m.

There also will be a concert dress rehearsal on Sunday beginning at 3:30 p.m. Both concerts are open to the public and no tickets are required.


July 25, 2017

This afternoon, at approximately 2:30 p.m. and again at approximately 3:40 p.m., the United States Capitol Police (USCP) responded to the Senate visitor galleries in the U.S. Capitol Building for reported demonstration activity.

Officers on the scene arrested the demonstrators when they failed to cease and desist with their unlawful demonstration activities. Thirty-one demonstrators were charged with DC Code §10-503.16 - Disruption of Congress.


July 25, 2017

Assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), will meet with representatives from the United States Capitol Police (USCP) to evaluate the Department's policies, procedures, operations, and administrative management services as it pertains to applicable CALEA standards. The assessment will take place July 30 – August 2, 2017.


July 19, 2017

On July 19, 2017, beginning at approximately 2:15 p.m., the United States Capitol Police (USCP) responded to 45 locations in the Senate Office Buildings for reported demonstration activity.

After officers arrived at the numerous scenes, they warned the demonstrators to cease and desist with their unlawful demonstration activities.


July 17, 2017

This afternoon, beginning at approximately 2 p.m., the United States Capitol Police (USCP) responded to the atrium in the Hart Senate Office Building for reported demonstration activity.

USCP officers warned the demonstrators to cease and desist with their unlawful demonstration activities. Those who refused to cease and desist were placed under arrest. Three adult males and two adult females were arrested in the atrium.


July 10, 2017

This afternoon, beginning at approximately 2 p.m., the United States Capitol Police (USCP) responded to 13 locations in the House and Senate Office Buildings for reported demonstration activity.

After officers arrived at the numerous scenes, they warned the demonstrators to cease and desist with their unlawful demonstration activities. Those who refused to cease and desist were placed under arrest and charged with D.C. Code §22-1307, Crowding, Obstructing, or Incommoding.
